Gothic Architecture
Gothic architecture is an architectural style that was prevalent in Europe from the late 12th to the 16th century, during the High and Late Middle Ages, surviving into the 17th and 18th centuries in some areas. It evolved from Romanesque architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture. It originated in the Île-de-France and Picardy regions of northern France.
Though it originated in the Middle Ages, the Gothic Architecture continues to captivate people today, as evident in some of Europe’s most beautiful buildings.
Architects are recently modifying the gothic style to adapt to the 21-century building style and they are making progress with that. Aesthetically ornate and conceptually transcendent, the Gothic style has become one of the world’s most distinctive Architectural movements.
One of the famous and oldest Gothic Architectural design in the world is the Cologne Cathedral. Cologne Cathedral is a cathedral in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia belonging to the Catholic Church. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and of the administration of the Archdiocese of Cologne. It is a renowned monument of German Catholicism and Gothic architecture and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996. It is Germany’s most visited landmark, attracting an average of 20,000 people a day. At 157 m (515 ft), the cathedral is the tallest twin-spired church in the world, the second tallest church in Europe after Ulm Minster, and the third tallest church of any kind in the world.
Standing inside the Cathedral, it was difficult for millions of people who had visited this Cathedral to imagine how such a magnificent structure could have been built back then.
