A master bedroom is a term that has been used to refer to the largest and the most desirable bedroom in a home. It is associated with having the best views and a location where the head or owner of the house sleeps. This term was first used in the early 20th century and has received critiques of being inherently manly and sexist. Consequentially, architects started using the term “Madam bedroom” for the room of the opposite sex in that position to compensate for this criticism.

The master bathroom or the madam bathroom is the bathroom located in the room which houses the head of the household. They are typically larger and better furnished than other bathrooms.

Some school of thought has insisted that a master bathroom is a room that must contain both a shower and a bathtub, either separate or combined. They argued that If a bathroom only has a shower, it isn’t technically a master bathroom, even if some advertising material may refer to it as such. Such rooms are known as 3/4 bathrooms instead.
